Abstract

Economic needs are a priority for every individual to live a good and prosperous life in living his life. The lack of employment opportunities in their own country is the main factor in the high unemployment rate in Indonesia. Interns must have the competence and competitive quality of human resources, including knowledge that includes the ability to read, write and count. These interpersonal skills include communication and teamwork skills, work ethic, and insight and experience. Apprenticeships can be carried out within and outside the territory of Indonesia. This study aims to determine and classify the competence of apprentices to obtain work abroad as foreign workers or Indonesian workers (TKI), especially at the North Sumatra Provincial Manpower Office. An easy and appropriate step in classifying the competencies of prospective workers for overseas internship programs is the Self Organizing Maps (SOM) method, which is a method for dividing input patterns into several cluster groups. The grouping is based on the competence of each workforce. The classification results can be used as a recommendation to the North Sumatra Provincial Manpower Office and are expected to maximize apprenticeship results abroad.
