Penerapan Preference Selection Index Dalam Menyeleksi Peserta Lomba Debat Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Provinsi (Studi Kasus : Dinas Pendidikan Provinsi)
Implementation of the Preference Selection Index in Selecting Participants in the Provincial Level English Debate Competition (Case Study: Provincial Education Office)
Abstract
In this era of globalization, English has become the primary language for education and technology, business, health, law, and others. Many people in the world have mastered English; if they want to compete in every aspect of life, they must master English. Debate is a communication process in which participants are required to propose or oppose a particular topic. Therefore, this study aims to determinea which English language skills can be developed so that they can compete at the national level, whether participating in English debates can significantly affect the development of English for students, and how to participate in national-level English competitions. This study uses the Preference Selection Index method to determine students eligible to participate in the national-level English debate competition. Researchers show that learning English through debate can provide several benefits, such as sharing opinions on certain issues, increasing students' confidence in public speaking, developing language skills, improving critical thinking, and stimulating intellectual students to solve problems and provide resolution. Moreover lastly, the researcher also shows that learning English through debate can develop speaking skills, listening skills, reading skills, and writing argumentative text skills.
